World Food Safety Day: Tackling Food Waste in the Kurdistan Region

Today, on World Food Safety Day, the Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies highlights a critical challenge facing the Kurdistan Region: food waste. In Erbil Province alone, roughly 600 tons of edible food are discarded daily—equivalent to 31.5% of the city’s total municipal waste. Across the Region, nearly 50% of all collected refuse is food that could have nourished families instead of filling landfills.
At the national level, the United Nations reports that 6 million tons of food go to waste in Iraq each year, with no comprehensive policies in place to stem these losses. Reducing food waste is not only vital for improving food security but also for conserving resources, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and fostering sustainable consumption practices throughout Kurdistan and beyond.
