Vision Foundation and Sulaimani Theatre Artists Take Steps to Revive Kurdish Theatre

17 June 2026

In a move aimed at supporting and revitalizing artistic and cultural activities, the Theatre Workshop Group, representing a number of theatre troupes, directors, and actors, visited the Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies on June 16, 2026. The delegation was warmly received by the Foundation’s President and members of its Board of Directors.
During the meeting, discussions focused on the current state of theatre and the challenges facing this art form, particularly in the city of Sulaimani, widely recognized as the cultural capital of the Kurdistan Region. The participants also highlighted issues related to infrastructure, management, and institutional support, all of which have a direct impact on theatrical activities.
A significant part of the discussions was devoted to assessing the impact of governmental decisions and directives issued in recent years, some of which have negatively affected the nature and vitality of the theatre movement in the Kurdistan Region, especially in Sulaimani.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides emphasized that addressing the challenges facing theatre requires institutional cooperation and coordination. They agreed to develop joint activities and projects and to formulate an effective roadmap for reviving theatre halls, artistic and cultural centers, and strengthening the role of theatre as one of the most important tools for culture and community development in the Kurdistan Region.
