Central Bank of Iraq Tightens Oversight of Banks

29 July 2026

Dr. Awder Abdulwahid, a specialist in business and administration, discussed the Central Bank of Iraq’s new policies and measures during a consultative session with the Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies. The discussion focused particularly on measures aimed at curbing the smuggling of US dollars out of the country and combating money laundering.

According to Dr. Abdulwahid, the Central Bank of Iraq is intensifying its supervision and scrutiny of banks as part of efforts to regulate financial transactions and align the country’s banking system with the requirements of the US Federal Reserve.

During the session, Dr. Abdulwahid also noted that a new electronic payment company (E-Payment) is expected to be established soon in Sulaymaniyah. The initiative could contribute to the development of digital financial services and facilitate financial transactions.

The discussion also addressed the procedures required to open a branch of the Central Bank of Iraq in Sulaymaniyah. Participants further stressed the importance of bringing both Al-Rasheed Bank and Al-Rafidain Bank back to the city to expand banking services and support local economic activity.
