46 children are living with their mothers in reform facilities in the Kurdistan Region
More than 400 drug addicts were rehabilitated
In another episode of the “Open Eye” program, the Director General of social reformatory in the Kurdistan Region announced the statistics of last year’s work and activities. According to the data, last year more than 8,000 people were arrested, and this year so far nearly 6,000 people have been sentenced.
Today, Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the Vision Foundation for Strategic Studies, another episode of the “Open Eye” program was held regarding the situation of prisoners in the Region’s reform facilities. In the open discussion, a number of relevant parties, journalists, and organizations participated and presented their proposals and remarks.
According to the statistics revealed by Ihsan Abdulrahman, Director General of social reformatory in the Kurdistan Region: last year, 7,152 detainees were released in the Kurdistan Region; 628 prisoners were granted the right to education; eight books were written by inmates; and educational rights were provided to 628 prisoners.
Also last year, 1,260 conditional releases were carried out, and 57 special pardons were issued. Regarding drug-related cases, 236 various activities were conducted, benefiting 406 convicts.
During the open discussion at the Vision Foundation, shortcomings within the reform facilities of the Kurdistan Region were addressed, including the shortage of researchers, the high number of prisoners, and the failure to implement the general amnesty law.
It was also discussed that the problem of unpaid salaries has had a negative impact on reform facilities, causing difficulties both in terms of staff and in providing basic humanitarian needs inside the facilities.
